The Combustion Byproducts Recycling Consortium
(Formerly The Emissions Control By-Products Consortium) |
The Combustion Byproducts Recycling Consortium (CBRC) is a program of the National Mine Land Reclamation Center, headquartered at West Virginia University, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory.
The objective of the CBRC is to develop and demonstrate technologies for coal-burning utilities and their suppliers for solving problems related to the production and handling of by-products such as ash from coal combustion processes. The developed technologies will serve as by-product management technologies capable of increasing overall utilization of coal combustion by-products by 10 percent.x |

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is a unit of the National Research Council, a private, nonprofit institution that is the principal operating agency of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. Four separate but integrated IDEA programs that encourage investigation of innovative but untested concepts offering the potential for technological breakthroughs in transportation are administered by TRB's Division E. The investigations are pursued under small contracts designed to demonstrate the feasibility of the innovative concepts. Participating researchers are selected from those responding to announcements soliciting proposals in the areas of interest to the transportation community.
Highway-related research is conducted under the NCHRP-IDEA Project for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) and is jointly supported by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and state agencies in cooperation with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. ITS-IDEA, which supports innovations in intelligent transportation systems, is jointly sponsored by FHWA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Federal Railroad Administration. HSR-IDEA, which supports innovations that facilitate implementation of high speed rail systems in the United States is sponsored by the Federal Railroad Administration.x |

Understanding "why" some pavements perform better than others is key to building and maintaining a cost-effective highway system. That's why in 1987, the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program--a comprehensive 20-year study of in-service pavements--began a series of rigorous long-term field experiments monitoring more than 2,400 asphalt and portland cement concrete pavement test sections across the United States and Canada.
Established as part of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and now managed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), LTPP was designed as a partnership with the States and Provinces. LTPP's goal is to help the States and Provinces make decisions that will lead to better performing and more cost-effective pavements.x |

US DOT Small Business Innovation research
Congress established the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program to stimulate technological innovation, utilize small business to meet federal research and development needs, encourage participation by minority and disadvantaged businesses in technological innovation, and increase private sector commercialization of innovations derived from federal R&D. In November 1982, the Secretary of Transportation chose the Volpe Center to direct the Department's SBIR Program due to its extensive background in innovative programs such as technology transfer, cooperative R&D agreements, outreach projects involving a cross-section of the transportation community, and technical assistance to state and local governments, as well as private organizations. The SBIR Program Office, located at the Volpe Center, directs all activities required under the SBIR law and executes the policy established by the Small Business Administration.x |
